The Oyo House of Assembly on Thursday extended the tenure of the 29 transitional local government chairmen in the state by three months.
The extension followed the unanimous adoption of the recommendation of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters presented at a plenary session on Thursday.
The committee headed by Assemblyman Akinkunmi Adelakun (ACN-Afijio) had met with the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Peter Odetomi and the 29 transitional chairmen. The meeting, which held under the auspices of the House caucus on Wednesday, was to resolve the issue of failed projects in the councils.
The committee after the meeting said that it observed that the slow pace of development in the councils was caused by the commissioner's moves to reposition the councils.
It, however, said that the delay in approval to execute projects by the ministry resulted in failed projects in the councils.
The committee recommended that the commissioner should henceforth devise means to fast track approvals for the execution of projects.
The report also recommended that the commissioner should liaise with the governor to ensure the immediate release of the excess crude oil money to local governments for the execution of development projects.
It also recommended that the tenure of the transitional chairmen, which expired on Nov. 10, be extended by another three months while calling for the upward review of the N500,000 spending limit given to them.
After a long debate on the recommendations by the lawmakers, Assemblyman James Oyeniran (ACN-Oluyole) moved for the adoption of the report while the motion was seconded by Assemblyman Fatai Salam (ACN-Iseyin/ Itesiwaju.)
When the Speaker Monsurat Sunmonu put the motion to question, the House unanimously adopted the motion. .
Meanwhile, a bill seeking the establishment of six new ministries in the state passed through the second reading on Thursday.
The ministries included Habitat, Culture and Tourism, Water Resources, Environment, Economic and Budgeting as well as Trade and Cooperatives. ( NAN )
