INCREDIBLE! Dead SUG President of Adeyemi College is the Only Child of His Mother

By Platform Newswire

FEW days after the untimely death of three students’ union leaders of some tertiary institutions of learning in Ondo state, in a ghastly auto crash, it has been discovered that the late president, SUG of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Comrade Abiodun Akintola is the only child of his mother.
Comrade Abiodun, aged 24 and other leaders of National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Comrade Dapo Awopegba of the Federal University of Technology, (FUTA) Akure and Comrade Oyinkansola Olotu of Ondo State School of Midwifery, also in Akure were killed last Friday night, in an automobile accident near Emure Ile, along Owo Road, Ondo state.
The latest casualty, Aremo Gbenga Oyebode was reported to have died earlier today, after receiving intensive medical care at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo.
They were returning from Abuja, after attending a ceremony reportedly organised by a faction of NANS which honoured Governor Olusegun Mimiko as the “Governor of the Year.”
According to the Ondo state Police Public Relations Officer, Aremu Adeniran, the NANS’ leaders died as a result of over-speeding. The bus, in which they had the accident, was donated to them by the Mimiko-led government of Ondo state.
Our correspondent, who visited the residence of the late SUG president of Adeyemi College at Oduduwa Street, New town area Ondo recently, was reliably informed by a family source that late Abiodun was living in the house with his mother.
The source stated that Abiodun’s mother collapsed and fainted when the news of the death of her son was broken to her by some family members. She recalled that she had earlier saw herself in a dream, where she carried a coffin, not knowing that the dream was a premonition of the impending death of her only child. It took the timely intervention of the deceased father, Mr. Bolawa Akintola, a Teacher, before the situation was brought under control.
THE PLATFORM can recall that the Late Comrade Abiodun has been having a showdown with the management of Adeyemi college of Education, Ondo, over alleged mysterious death of some students of some students of the institution.
The bottled-up grievances of the students on the issue caused the recent violent riot, which led to the destruction of property, worth millions of Naira at the college premises, and the indefinite closure of the college by its governing council.
Notwithstanding the precarious situation of things at the college, the management of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo has paid a condolence visit to the parents of the late student union president at their residence in Oduduwa Street. Ondo town.
The management team was led by the deputy Provost of the college, Dr Olufemi Olajuyigbe, last Sunday afternoon, conveyed the condolence message of the provost and prayed that God will give the parents the fortitude to bear the great loss.
Meanwhile, cross sections of Nigerians have reacted to the news of the death of the student leaders.
According to them, NANS has become highly politicised, making it a ready and willing tool in the hands of politicians. The organisation has been accused of taking stand against the masses in support of government’s draconian policies. Its leaders have also been identified with the concept of bestowing controversial awards on any government in power, for financial gains.
A former student union president of FUTA, Hon. Otito Atikase described the Olusegun Mimiko government as a government of tragedy and failure.
Atikase, who was also a former member of the Ondo state House of Assembly, used his Facebook page to mourn the students.
Also, in his official reaction to the untimely death of the three student union leaders, the candidate of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo state, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu has described the incident as a needless carnage.
Akeredolu, in a statement he issued last Sunday night said, “The news of the gruesome but needless deaths of students who went to participate in the charade called an award ceremony, ostensibly sponsored by the awardees, came as a very rude shock to us. Whilst we commiserate with the families of the deceased and wish the injured speedy recovery, the fact must be stressed quietly that this sad event was, however, avoidable.”
Akeredolu averred that it is regrettable that the students’ body, which was regarded as a potent force of opposition to bad governments in the past has allowed its voice to be muffled as a direct consequence of the absence of basic ideology.
“The award ceremony purportedly organised by the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, was to confer “honours” on the Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, among others. These special awardees were marked for recognition for their “excellent” performances. The governor’s award is “the best Governor, 2012”, not minding the fact that Ondo State Government under his watch has nether paid its students their due bursary nor scholarships in the last two years,” he added.
“To some of us who were leaders in our own right during our days in the university, the direction of our Student bodies has been of serious concern. It is highly regrettable that while the country is adrift our students are busy conferring empty awards on deceitful politicians. There can be no better confirmation of lack of perception than the choice of Ondo State Governor for the state-sponsored ceremony. Most of our students who are able to assess what is on ground in Ondo State cannot but agree that the profligate propensity of the Mimiko led Government is unprecedented, the statement concluded.
In the words of Barrister Tolu Babaleye, on his Facebook page “What is happening in Ondo State? Why must Students Union Leaders of FUTA, School of Midwifery Akure and Adeyemi College of Education Ondo follow the Governor of Ondo State to Abuja to receive award as “best governor in the World”?
“Why and when did student union leaders become tools in the hands of government and the powers that be to the extent of following a governor to pick up an award? What is the business of Students with these awards when they cannot get their bursary and scholarship as at when due from that same government? Must we play politics with everything? Na wa o! I do not know the contribution of Ondo State Governor to FUTA and Adeyemi College, if not for inducement and “egunje” for boys to create impression that Mr. Governor is popular and acceptable to all in Ondo State. This is a big lesson for other Student Leaders in Ondo State as all that glitters is not gold.
Also, the Chairman of Ondo state chapter of Peoples’ Democratic Party, Hon Ebenezer Alabi advised politicians to leave students out of partisan politics in Ondo State.
His words, “I think it is high time we live our students out of partisan politics in Ondo State. They are sent to schools to learn and acquire knowledge in order to be useful to themselves, family members and the society at large. A situation where an ambitious person will purchase a brand new vehicle as political gift and in the course of justifying the cost and the motive behind it, valuable and precious lives of promising young ones are lost is alarming. The ambition of an individual does not worth the blood of any person. Students please be wise! A word is enough for the wise.
In the words of Ope Omoriwo, “Why are students protesting in Akure? Is it that the deceased were invited to witness the occasion or that they were part of the tools used to secure frivolous awards? Adeyemi College students aren't in school on the account of unrest in their school due to the protest staged by the students of the institution some months ago to express their anger on the spate of sudden death of their colleagues in Ondo.
Omoriwo added, “The school was closed down since then. If not for something else, the ACE President should be at his father house. This same government that couldn't pay promptly, the tertiary students bursary and scholarship for 2010 academic session suddenly turned to students’ friend just because we're closed to election time. If the governor is fooling other people why should students be falling victim? May the Lord console the parents of the deceased.”
According to Mr. Akande Akin Sanyaolu, “This accident, I believe is a call to students to be calm in whatever steps they take in their struggle to make a leverage in an economy so harsh, even for a professional to survive. Our spiritual interactions should over-ride the physical in order to over-power the tendency of being control by juvenile delinquencies typical of every youth in struggle for survival in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Ondo state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has described the death of three students’ union leaders in an auto crash as painful and shocking to the State government.
He stated this recently, when he visited survivors of the accident who are receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, describing it as one accident too many.
While commiserating with the families of the victims and NANS, Mimiko described the death as a painful loss and prayed God to give the State, the families and indeed the student body the fortitude to bear the loss.
“This accident, and the attendant loss, is absolutely painful to the government and people of Ondo State. I can feel the pains of the families, the students and all men and women of goodwill right in my heart,” he said
“We are however sobered by the fact that young as the students were, they were leaders of their groups and contributors to the development of our society. A big vacuum has been created by this sad loss. The duty we owe is to make sure the survivors have access to urgent and focused medical care.” Mimiko added.
