Thirty three years after it was last reviewed, the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko on
Wednesday at the State’s weekly Executive Council meeting gave accent to a law empowering
the State’s Attorney-General to prepare a new and revised edition of the Laws of Ondo State.
While signing the bill into law, Governor Mimiko said that the last time a similar exercise was
last done in 1978 saying that with his accent, there would now be ample opportunity to update
those laws contained in the volumes of Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006 and for other
connected or ancillary purposes. To him, this was an idea whose time had come in order for the
State to be abreast with current trends in law.
The State House of Assembly had earlier passed the Bill for the revised edition of the laws of
Ondo State for the accent of the Governor. Similarly, Governor Mimiko equally restated his
commitment to taking decisions that would benefit the majority of the people of the state with
an admonition to members of the state Executive Council to rededicate themselves to the
service of the people. The Governor stated this during the dedication of the newly rehabilitated
state Executive Council Chambers of his office in Akure, the state capital.
The weekly state executive council meetings, in the last three months, had been held inside the
Banquet Hall of the Government House in order to pave way for the renovation of the Council
Chambers. However, Wednesday’s weekly council meeting was held in the new council
chambers, shortly after its dedication by Elder Tunde Adesida, who was joined by Bishop
Michael Ipinmoye of the Anglican Communion and Pastor Sanya Kolajo of the Redeemed
Chrisman Church of God Province IV Akure. According to Dr Mimiko, his administration had
embarked on renovation and rehabilitation of the Secretariat complex in Akure so as to make it
more befitting and attractive, adding that most parts of the complex were in deplorable
conditions that require attention. His words: “With this dedication I hope we will rededicate
ourselves to the service of our people in Ondo state. Our meetings could be exciting at times
when we engaged in some robust discussions, I’m sure this will continue. I’ve said it that our
guiding principle is that we will continue to take decisions that we perceive are in the best
interest of the greatest number of our people.
“We never pretended that we can please anybody but we will continue to take whatever
decision we think is in the best interest of our people. That is what our party stands for, that is
what we’re trying to do in this executive council chambers. I can assure everybody in Ondo
State that we remain firmly and committed to this very important principle of governance.
“Apart from the whole of the Secretariat, which had not really undergone any renovation
before, we also said we needed to configure our Executive Council Chambers to make it look
like Executive Chambers so properly called. We thank God for the result of this. All of us in the
Executive Council that had been here before will attest to the fact that this is a very good job.”
He called for continued prayers for the Lord to open the hidden treasure of the land, “for us to
be able to do all the things that the Lord has placed in our heart for the people of this state”.
In his speech, Bishop Michael Ipinmoye charged members of the state Executive Council to
always exhibit loyalty to the God and the Governor, adding that they should try to please their
conscience in their decision making.
He described the vision of the present administration to transform the state as unique and
unprecedented.
