Tribunal affirms PDP candidate winner of Kebbi North Senatorial District election

The Kebbi National and State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal has upheld the victory of Alhaji Isah Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the April 9 senatorial election.
The candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, Alhaji Umar Tafida, had challenged the election of the PDP candidate for alleged irregularities.
A copy of the judgment signed by the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Alero Edodo-Eruaga, and obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday, stated that Mohammed scored 102,736 valid votes while Tafida polled 87,839 ballots.
The tribunal ruled that the unlawful votes scored by both candidates due to non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010, as amended, did not affect the outcome of the election result.
``The substantial non-compliance did not result in substantially affecting the outcome of the election after deduction of invalid votes and Alhaji Isah Mohammed (PDP) still had the highest lawful votes for the Kebbi North Senatorial District,'' the tribunal said.
It, therefore, dismissed Tafida's petition and upheld the election of Mohammed.
The tribunal, however, did not award any costs.
