Governor Aregbesola approves N187.5 million to combat Osogbo flooding

Determined to prevent a repeat experience of annual deadly flood disaster, Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has approved the release of N187.5 million for immediate dredging and combating perennial flooding of three major streams in Osogbo.
The approval for the contract awarded to Messrs Accord Engineering Limited followed a submission made by the Osun State Environmental Protection Agency (OSEPA) to cater for the phase one of the Osogbo Township Drainage.
Conveying the approval, governor Aregbesola has mandated the contractor to complete the project within 16 weeks from the date of receipt of materials advance while the project must be equally matched with 16 weeks of monitoring.
The three main streams which have been causing heavy flooding in the state capital were identified as Okorokoro, Ogbaagbaa and Alekunwodo streams.
The Osogbo township Drainage works was designed to include removal of debris, channelization, desilting and improving of existing hydraulic structures on the three streams.
Last year, many lives were lost while goods and property worth several millions of Naira were damaged by flooding which sacked houses located along the major streams in Osogbo.
Many traders who had shops and locked-up stalls along Rasco hall, Dugbe and Olonkoro areas of the state capital lost goods worth several millions of Naira to heavy flooding which halted human and vehicular movements in the state capital.
Unsuspecting members of the public who attempted crossing the flood were swept away just as houses collapsed leaving hundreds of people homeless.
