Master plan to reposition tourism, says Minister

Nigeria has developed a master plan to reposition tourism as a major contributor to the economy, Tourism, Culture and National Orientation Minister Edem Duke has said.
Duke made this known on Tuesday in Abuja at the opening of the sensitisation workshop on sustainable tourism policy, strategy and hospitality development.
According to him, Nigeria provides unique tourism products and facilities aimed at promoting tourism locally and internationally.
``The ministry is therefore saddled with the responsibility for repositioning the tourism sector as a major contributor to the economy and to make Nigeria the ultimate tourism destination in Africa.
``Tourism has huge potential capable of contributing significantly to employment generation, wealth creation and sustainable poverty reduction, through the numerous activities in the sector,’’ Duke said.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Alhaji Ibrahim Mahe had said that the workshop was to enlighten stakeholders on the roles in the implementation of the master plan.
`` The workshop is expected to identify and deliberate on the challenges therein and proffer solutions to the effective implementation of the recommendations of the master plan.
`` Tourism has been recognised as available alternative to crude oil in contributing substantially to the Gross Domestic Product and also as a priority sector for the attainment of MDGs  and the Vision 20: 2020,’’ Mahe said. (NAN)
