OAUTHC soon to perform open heart surgery -- Minister

Ile-Ife(Osun), Aug. 13, 2011 (NAN)  The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said on Friday that ObafemiAwolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Osun, would soon perform open heart surgery.
Chukwumade the statement during an  assessment visit to the hospital preparatory to the inauguration of the Federal Government/VAMED projects in the institution.
 The minister said the medical team for the surgery had been trained and nearly all the equipment needed installed.
 He also said that DNA analysis could done by both the OAUTHC and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and called on Nigerians to make effective use of the facilities instead of going overseas for medical treatment.  
Among equipment installed at the hospital are Magnetic Resonance Imaging Machine (MRI), Computerised Tomography (CT) and Fluoroscopy machines.
Others are  haemodialysis machines, theatre and intensive care equipment,, modern laboratory equipment and a 48--body capacity morgue.
 The minister commended both the management of the hospital and the contractor; VAMED,  for the job done and their commitment to the realisation of the projects.  
“There is no need for any Nigerians to travel abroad henceforth for medical treatment with what is on ground in the hospital which is 95 per cent ready,’’ Chukwu said, adding that the hospital had become a centre of excellence.
He said as soon as the contractors completed  the job, President Goodluck Jonathan would come to inaugurate the projects.
 Prof. Oluwole Akande, the Chairman of the board of the hospital, thanked the Federal Government for including the institution in the second phase of refurbishment of teaching hospitals by VAMED. (NAN)
