Prison decongestion: Niger CJ frees 48 inmates

The Chief Judge of Niger, Justice Jibrin Ndajiwo, on Friday freed 48 inmates in Minna old prison, urging them to be of good behavior and contribute positively to the society.
The action was to de-congest prison yards in Niger.
The inmates included those who have almost completed their jail terms,  sick ones, those on awaiting trial for a long period without evidence that they are guilty.
Others are those who have exhibited good behaviour while serving their jail terms.
Ndajiwo said his visit to prison formations in the state was an annual event aimed at de-congesting the prisons.
``In order to de-congest the prisons, we may visit them twice in a year instead of once if time permits,” he said.
He appealed to the prison authorities to treat the inmates as human beings in order to reform them to be better persons in the society.
He added that ``they need to be reformed positively instead of being hardened the more”.
The chief judge commended the prison authorities for tolerating the inmates, adding that the treatment meted to them would affect their lives when freed.
NANreports that the visit would continue on Saturday at the Minna new prison. (NAN)
