Obasanjo, Alao-Akala urge Nigerians to live in peace

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday urged Nigerians to imbibe the lessons of the Ramadan fast and co-habit peacefully.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Obasanjo gave the Ramadan message while fielding questions from  journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.
``Happy Eld-el-Fitri to the Muslim and non-Muslim alike. God in his infinite mercies should show us peace, progress and development in the land,” he said.
Former Oyo State Gov. Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, who received Obasanjo, also called on Nigerians to reflect on the lessons of the period as they celebrate the Eid-el-Fitri festival.
Alao-Akala said that Nigerians should move closer to God and desist from activities that would lead to the disintegration of the nation.
``Our Muslim brothers have fasted for 30 days and it is for them to move closer to God and not to go back to those things we used to do before the commencement of the fast.
``We want a very peaceful country. It is only under a peaceful atmosphere that other things can take place. When the country is not peaceful, we will not develop,’’ he said.
Alao-Akala also said that the current security situation in the nation was a reflection of the society.
``There are lots of things going wrong when it comes to security and the country gets the kind of police it wants.
``We should try as much as possible to be our brother’s keeper and we should know that this country belongs to all of us and those of them fermenting trouble should stop.
``That is the only thing that can move the country forward and we are not portraying ourselves well before the international community. May God save all of us,’’ he said.
The former governor described the flooding in Ibadan as unfortunate, saying that “if I want to advise Gov. Abiola Ajimobi, I will not do it on the pages of newspapers. I will advise him secretly.”
