I will be a leader, not a ruler, says President Jonathan

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has said that he would be a leader and not a ruler over Nigeria.

At an interactive session with a cross section of Nigerian youths as part of activities towards the Presidential Inauguration, in Lagos on Tuesday, May 24, the President reassured that in the next four years, he would work with all Nigerians and take youth matters to new heights.

President Jonathan who dedicated his victory at the presidential polls to Nigerian youths, said his election was made possible by the youths.

Noting that the "presidential election has shown that this country is one and belongs to all of us," he stressed that the broad mandate given him "is the beginning of unity and change in Nigeria."

President Jonathan who described the youths as a vibrant, energetic and significant proportion of the country's population that must be planned for, said the "challenge in four years is to form a base for a robust economy to take care of the needs and potentials of our young ones."

He assured them that the Federal Government would surely work with them while restating his administration's commitment to continue to encourage women to play significant roles in all sectors.

In response to a question on the continued relevance of the NYSC, the President was emphatic that the scheme will not be scrapped.

"It is a programme that is helpful to the Nigerian youths and has exposed them to different cultures," adding that the FG will continue to encourage the programme because of its unifying benefits.

President Jonathan however noted that after more than three decades, it is time to review the NYSC and "make it more functional, practical and profitable for Nigerian youths."

Representatives of various youth groups such as the Nigerian Youth Council (NYC), National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and Nollywood congratulated President Jonathan on his electoral success while reaffirming their hope in his ability to change the fortunes of Nigerian youths.
