A cross-Motorists plying the Akure/Ado- Ekiti road have expressed concern over the deplorable state of the road. A cross-section of them who spoke with Saturday Mirror said though it is a federal road, the Ondo State government is not addressing the plight of the people by not carrying out remedial works on it.
Some of them who regularly ply the road said its bad condition had taken its toll on their vehicles and health, a situation which had caused them to visit hospitals and auto mechanic workshops frequently. According to them, it used to be a pleasure riding on the road but potholes and craters has now made every journey on the road a bad experience for them. Adetunji Afeni, a commercial motor driver who claimed to have been plying the road for more than 20 years, wondered why the bad condition of the road had not been an issue of concern for the appropriate government ministry or agency.

“We find it difficult to understand why bad condition of roads is not promptly attended to in this country. This is one of the tragedies of the country. This road has been in a deplorable state for some years now. It requires comprehensive repair works but nobody seems to feel concern,” Afeni lamented. Another commercial driver, Kabiru Akanji, said, “The bad state of the road has really affected us, our passengers and our vehicles. It has turned us into regular visitors to hospitals and mechanic workshops. We understand it is a federal road but it will be appreciated if the state government can intervene.” Recalling the past when the road was in a good condition, Alhaji Jelili Akinji who claimed to be a former chairman of the Akure/Ado-Ekiti unit of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) said commercial drivers always loved to ply the route in the past but that the bad state of the road had driven them away from the route.
