Patients Groan as Doctors’ Strike Persists in Ondo

By 'Bola Adeyileka

AS THE strike action embarked  upon  by medical doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association ( NMA),Ondo state continues, the action appeared to have started having its toll on the residents of Ondo town.
When PLATFORM visited the State Specialist Hospital, some residents of Ondo town who probably were unaware of the strike action and have visited the state specialist hospital in the town to seek medical attention were disappointed as they could not be attended to.
Although the nurses and management cadres in all sections at hospital in place such the pharmacy, children, female, maternity, septic and male wards as well as card section and morgue reported for duty, there was however low population of patients as investigation revealed that most of them who were on admission prior to the strike action have been removed to their different homes.
Investigation further revealed that as result of the industrial action by the doctors, the situation has led to an increase in the numbers of patients patronizing them. Similarly, operators of traditional homes and sellers of herbs have experienced a leap in their activities.
When our correspondent met the Chief Medical Director ( CMD) of the hospital, Dr. Ayodele Adiji over the matter he explained that although  doctors at the hospital have complied  with the directives from the state chapter of the NMA to proceed on the industrial action, skeletal services were however offered  to patients who have special cases.
Adiji however expressed optimism that the strike action which is temporary would soon be resolved adding that the situation has not shut the hospital as other management staff at the hospital is always at their duty post.
However in their reactions to the industrial action, some residents of the town who spoke with PLATFORM described the situation as unfortunate. They however appealed to the state government and the doctors to engage in dialogue so as to resolve their differences in the interest of the people.
