Works Minister Reopens FERMA Fixed Zaria Flyover Bridge

The Minister of Works, Senator Muhammed Sanusi Daggash on Saturday, 21st May 2011 in Zaria, Kaduna State re-opened a vital flyover bridge on the Kaduna – Kano Expressway. A luxury bus had on 21st February 2009 caught fire under the bridge causing extensive damage to the Kano-bound lane of the flyover.

As a precautionary measure, the Minister said, the Kano-bound lane of the bridge was closed to all traffic which was diverted to the Kaduna-bound lane.

Daggash said FERMA under the leadership of Engr. Kabiru Abdullahi commissioned two separate investigations to determine the effect of the fire on the structural strength of the bridge and proffer solutions.

The result of those investigations, Daggash noted, proffered well defined solutions that included high-tech sand blasting, replacing the concrete with fibre composite materials bounded to the surface using epoxy adhesive, scraping of the cover of the main beam and applying protective coating on the bridge elements among other measures.

The Minister said FERMA had thoroughly and satisfactorily carried out the prescribed remedial works using a very competent contractor and was convinced that the bridge was now safe for traffic.

He thanked motorists and the general public for their understanding while the repair work lasted, saying the long time it took to be completed was necessary to ensure that a good job was done.
