Nigerian Christians Push Stiffer Law for Bombers

By Success Uchime

The Nigerian Christians under the auspices of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is pushing for a stiffer law to punish those perpetuating bombing in the country.
In a statement, the Chairman, CAN, Bauchi State chapter, Rev. Lawi Pokti, said the unabated killings of innocent citizens in the two states and other parts of northern Nigeria through bomb blasts by suspected Islamic fundamentalists popularly known as Boko Haram should not be allowed to continue.
According to the CAN boss, government should introduce stiffer laws to curtail the incident, as this remains the only panacea to ensuring that peace and tranquility is returned to the troubled areas, adding that dialogue should also be employed.
He regretted that in spite of government and security efforts to nip in the bud the escalating bomb blasts, the situation is fast degenerating into a boiling point.
The reverend gentleman warned perpetrators to desist from the devilish and senseless act because it is capable of jeopardizing national unity and cohesion.
He said: “It is disturbing to note that in 1977, when I relocated from my village to Bauchi metropolis for greener pastures, there was peace as people moved from one place to another without fear of any attack. Today, it is a different ball game as faceless persons have made our society unbearable by making people live in perpetual fear”, Pokti fumed.
The CAN chairman urged the public to always give maximum support and vital information to security agencies to aid in curbing the insecurity.
On the need to ensure good governance in the state, the CAN chairman stated that the association is always ready to challenge Governor Isa Yuguda through constructive criticism without fear or favor as part of its obligations for effective development.
He stated further, that CAN’s major concern is to serve as bridge builder between the Christian community and government so as to have a harmonious living, adding that the association would not be deterred in performing its duties.
Pokti reiterates that Yuguda’s efforts to ensure timely supply of fertilizer to farmers in the state, demonstrated the administration’s commitment to fulfilling its campaign promises, stressing that the fertilizer is cheap compared to subsequent years.
He advised the Christian community to always remain law abiding and to support government where necessary with a view to achieving its desired goals in its policies and programs.
