PDP warns against making Bankole a scapegoat

Obiora Ani, Abuja(VON)
The Elders Council of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, South West Nigeria, has warned against making the former Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, a scapegoat.
Addressing reporters in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Thursday, the Chairman of the Elders Council, Chief Sule Onabiyi, said Mr Bankole should be treated as innocent until proven guilty, stressing that the former Speaker should be accorded all courtesies and fundamental rights befitting his high office.
Observing due process
The council explained that, while it was not against the fight against corruption or the prosecution of Dimeji Bankole by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), it wanted due process be followed in the case.
It equally advised that the former Speaker should not be victimized and portrayed as a criminal when a competent court of jurisdiction had not pronounced him.
They pleaded with Nigerians to be patient while the case progresses.
The immediate past Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja on Wednesday by the EFCC on a 16-count charge over allegation of corruption while in office but he pleaded not guilty.
