Oyo Picks First Female Speaker

By Tunde Sanni (This Day)
The seventh Oyo State House of Assembly was formally inaugurated with a woman, Monsurat Jumoke Sunmonu from Oyo East/Oyo West constituency of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) emerging Speaker of the assembly.
But the proclamation of the seventh assembly was not without its hiccups as two journalists, Lekan Adetayo (Punch) and Yomi Tade of Radio Continental  almost went blind as a police officer, Sylvester Goddy, an Assistant Superintendent of Police {ASP}, the Divisional Crime Officer {DCO} of the Parliament Police Station in his desperation to control the crowd had to use teargas which sprinkles landed on the eyes of the two journalists.
The police officer ignored the agonising cries of the two journalists and queried them for daring to enter the assembly complex through the police station. His men at the police station even attempted to drive away the crying journalists from the spot as rescue workers were trying to restore their sights.
In the meantime, Sunmonu, who until her emergence was an Immigration Officer and a Civil Servant, had her election sponsored by Ibrahim Bolomope of the Accord Party and supported by Ganiu Adekunle of the ACN. Sunmonu was however elected unopposed.
David Olaniyan of the Accord Party representing Ibadan North 1 constituency emerged the Deputy Speaker to signal a seeming alliance between the ruling ACN and the AP in the assembly.
