Bank Guards Steal Customer’s 13,000 Euros

Police attached to Bar Beach Police Division, Victoria Island, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, have arraigned two security guards before Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on a two-count charge of stealing a bank customer’s 13,000 euros.
The police alleged that the suspects, Samuel Towei, 27 and Audu Michael, 27, recruited by a private security firm and attached to an old generation bank on Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria Island stole 13,000 euros belonging to Victor Ejirika of Romy Garden Estate, Lekki.
The man went to transact business with the bank when the incident happened.
Nemesis, however, caught up with the security guards when the bank manager and the victim reported the matter to the police.
The suspects were arrested and interrogated. They initially denied knowledge of the missing money, but when the CCTV installed in the bank premises was replayed, Towei was seen picking the envelop which contained the missing money and later passed it to Michael.
In his confessional statement to the police, Towei admitted picking the money and handing it over to his partner in crime to keep it even when he knew that the owner of the money was in search of it.
“Iam supposed to be a role model as the security guard in charge of the bank. My conduct is not only unprofessional but I regret my action and I seek for forgiveness from the police and the victim,” Towei said.
The police recovered 9,100 euros from the suspects and handed back the money to the owner.
After investigation, they were charged before Igbosere Magistrate’s Court for stealing. The offences, according to the prosecutor ASP Julius Oyakhilome, are punishable under Section 516 and 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 17, 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the presiding magistrate, A. F. O. Botoku, granted them bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the matter till 26 October, 2011 for mention.
The accused were remanded in Ikoyi Prison when they could not perfect their bail conditions on time.
