Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, has called for the creation of additional states in the South East geo-political zone.
Iwuanyanwu made the call on Tuesday in his Ikeduru country home in Atta in Imo, when the Acting National Chairman of the party, Malam Abubakar Baraje, paid him a condolence visit over the death of his wife, Eudora.
He said the zone had the least number of states out of the six geo-political zones, and that it was high time the inequality was addressed.
Iwuanyanwu also called on President Goodluck Jonathan to give special consideration to the zone in the appointment of members of the boards of federal establishments.
He explained that such consideration was one way to address, in the interim, alleged marginalisation of the zone that voted massively for the president during the April general elections.
He said, however, said that the emergence of Chief Ike Ekweremadu as Deputy Senate President and Chief Emeka Ihedioha as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, had given the zone some sense of belonging.
Iwuanyanwu said that the Igbos were committed to the unity of the nation, adding that the people had continued to make other parts of the country their home by investing in such places.
He thanked Baraje and the entire leadership of the party for commiserating with him on the death of his wife, saying that her death had created a vacuum in his life.
Earlier, the PDP national chairman had said that the leadership of the party was deeply touched by Eudora’s death.
Baraje,who was accompanied by other National Working Committee members of the party, described the deceased as a mother, who would ever be missed by the party and the nation.
He advised the BoT member not to allow the loss to weaken his spirit, but should regard it as a challenge. (NAN)
