Jigawa plants 83,620 trees in schools

The Jigawa State Government has planted 83, 620 trees in schools across the state, as part of its 2011 Tree Planting Campaign.
Gov.Sule Lamido disclosed this at the commencement of the campaign at a school in Bamaina, Birnin Kudu Local Government Area.
He said that the part of the tree-planting campaign entailed planting trees in schools and other institutions to engender competition among the students.
The governor, who was represented by Alhaji Adamu Ahmed, the Speaker of the state Assembly, stressed that the aim of the venture was to encourage school children to imbibe the habit of planting and nurturing trees.
He said that this was a strategy aimed at complementing government efforts in tackling desert encroachment and environmental degradation.
Lamido expressed the hope that the planted trees would also provide shelter in the schools, while improving the quality of the environment.
Also speaking, Prof. Haruna Wakili, the Commissioner for Education, said that more than 83,000 trees had been planted in various schools across the state.
He said that a special annual prize would be awarded to schools that nurtured the trees to maturity. (NAN)
